Naira Holds Steady Against Dollar as May Begins

Share

Dollar to Naira Exchange Rate – May 1, 2026

The Nigerian Naira began May with minor fluctuations against the US Dollar across both official and informal markets, reflecting a cautious but relatively stable outlook. Early trading data from the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), along with parallel market activity in Lagos and Abuja, suggests the currency is still searching for a consistent support level.

Official Market Overview
At the official window, the Naira opened trading at about ₦1,374.69 per dollar. This comes after slight volatility toward the end of April, when rates hovered around the ₦1,375 mark. Analysts point to ongoing liquidity injections by the Central Bank as a key factor helping to stabilize the exchange rate within this range.

Demand remains steady, particularly for trade-related transactions. However, the narrow difference between the highest and lowest rates recorded during early trading indicates a careful and measured start to the new month.

Parallel Market Activity
In the parallel (black) market, exchange rates closely mirror the official figures. Bureau De Change operators are quoting the dollar between ₦1,374 and ₦1,376, highlighting a notable convergence between both markets. This alignment reduces opportunities for arbitrage and discourages speculative currency hoarding.

Meanwhile, demand for other foreign currencies has slightly increased. The British Pound is trading at around ₦1,735, while the Canadian Dollar is approximately ₦1,010 in the informal market.

Economic Outlook
The current stability is largely attributed to consistent regulatory interventions and improved monitoring of foreign exchange inflows. However, the outlook remains sensitive to external and domestic factors, particularly global oil prices and Nigeria’s inflation trends.

For consumers and businesses, the narrowing gap between official and parallel rates offers more clarity for financial planning. Still, the elevated cost of imports continues to drive up prices of goods, especially electronics and other imported products.
